"To get respect, you have to give it"

If I had to create a bumper sticker it would be "To get respect, you have to give it". It has been a slogan that I have been preached and taught my whole life. This is an important part of who my family and I are. Not only is this saying one my dad uses frequesntly, but I believe that it should be used as a guideline for everyone.

This phrase is somewhat similar to the golden rule except that it is more detailed in the fact that it is specifically referring to respect.

Examples of this include getting up from a chair to let an elderly person or someone older than you to have a seat. Also, my sisters and I have been raised to use common manners such as holder the door open for someone walking in behind you, saying please and thank you when necessary, and saying "excuse me" walking by someone when you're in their way.

All in all, respect is what keeps the world turning and without it the people that live on it would have utter chaos.

  1. I like your article. Respect is hard in this culture to gain, and easy to give it. I never thought about how closely related to the Golden Rule it really is, but your right. I would like to see in the future an example of how you recieved respect by giving it.
